An 8-day private safari following the great migration to the legendary Mara River crossing points in the northern Serengeti. Luxury tented camps are positioned for optimal wildebeest and zebra crossing viewing - approximately 1.3–1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra make this annual journey. When is the best time for a Tanzania safari?
The dry season from June to October is the best time for wildlife viewing in Tanzania. Game concentrates around water sources, vegetation thins for better visibility, and the great migration’s dramatic Mara River crossings typically occur July through October in the northern Serengeti.
January through February offers a compelling alternative: the southern Serengeti calving season draws extraordinary predator activity, landscapes are lush and green, and vehicle traffic is lighter compared to peak season.
Shoulder months (November, March, early June) bring fewer crowds, moderate weather, and lower rates – sometimes 30–50% lower. The green season (April–May) offers dramatic scenery and superb birding across Tanzania’s 1,000-plus bird species, though some remote lodges close and roads can become challenging. Tanzania’s Southern Circuit is less crowded and remote year-round, offering excellent game viewing even during busier northern seasons. Private safaris typically start at around $400 per person per day for mid-range experiences, scaling upward based on lodging caliber, exclusivity, and season.
How far in advance should I book my Tanzania safari?
For peak season (July–October) and holiday periods, we recommend booking 9–12 months in advance. Luxury lodges in prime locations like the northern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater fill quickly – especially camps with fewer than 16 beds.
Shoulder and green season bookings offer more flexibility; 3–6 months of lead time is often sufficient, and availability at lower rates can be excellent.
Is Tanzania safe for safari travel?
