Your adventure begins with a bush flight from Arusha directly into the Serengeti, landing at the airstrip closest to the current predator hot zone. During calving season, that’s Ndutu airstrip on the southern plains. During the dry season, it may be Seronera in the central Serengeti. This eliminates the six-to-eight-hour overland transfer that standard safaris use, putting you into prime wildlife territory within an hour of departure. You meet your dedicated guide at the airstrip with chilled refreshments, and the first game drive begins immediately.
Depending on the season, we select Lemala Nanyukie, Simbavati Grumeti, Four Seasons, or TNS Ndutu for this leg of the journey, specifically for their prime locations in the heart of big cat territory that makes game drives immediately accessible.

Serengeti National Park is considered the capital for big cats in East Africa, and the Seronera Valley in particular supports one of the highest concentrations of leopards anywhere in Africa. The Serengeti–Mara ecosystem supports approximately 3,000 lions, with 1,500 to 2,500 residing within Serengeti National Park’s 14,763 square kilometers. Your guides know individual animals-which lion has multi-colored eyes, which leopard favors a particular sausage tree, which cheetah coalition patrols a specific ridge.
The southern Serengeti’s open savannah stretching from Ndutu to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area boundary is where the calving season unfolds in one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles. The southeastern plains of the Serengeti are ideal habitat for cheetahs, and during calving months the concentration of newborn prey draws lions, cheetahs, and hyenas into constant, visible hunting activity. Namiri Plains is renowned for exceptional cheetah viewing and sits within reach of this southern circuit. Central Serengeti is known for high concentrations of lions, leopards, and cheetahs, and as you explore the transitional zones between south and center, the density of serengeti big cats becomes evident.
Each morning, your guide positions the vehicle along known pride territories and cheetah hunting corridors. Cheetahs are best observed in the Serengeti’s open terrain, where their hunting success rate can reach roughly 70% when targeting Thomson’s gazelles. Large prides of lions are common throughout the Serengeti, and in the Ndutu area during February, lion hunts are visible on the vast majority of morning drives. Leopards thrive in rocky kopjes and dry-season woodlands scattered across the plains’ edges-leopards are frequently seen in the riverine forests and rocky outcrops of the Serengeti.

What are my chances of seeing all three big cat species?
During peak calving season in the Ndutu area (January through February), lions and cheetahs are encountered almost daily, while leopard sightings occur on roughly 70–80% of safaris. During the dry season in the central and northern Serengeti, lion encounter rates remain very high, leopard sightings are strong in the Seronera Valley, and cheetah encounters depend on open-plain access. On an 6-day itinerary covering multiple zones, the probability of encountering all three species, lions, leopards, and cheetahs, is high.
When is the best time for big cat viewing?
Two windows stand out. January through March-especially February-delivers the highest predator density in the southern Serengeti as calving season triggers constant hunting. June through October, the dry season, concentrates all wildlife around remaining water sources, making territorial patterns predictable and sightings reliable. Both periods offer excellent opportunities for close encounters with big cats. The Great Migration’s annual cycle shapes predator behavior year-round, and we adjust this itinerary month by month to follow it.
How close can we get to the big cats?
Our vehicles are modified Toyota Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs that allow standing for unobstructed views. In many encounters, particularly with habituated prides and individual cats our guides know well, sighting distances of 10 to 25 meters are common. All approaches follow strict safety protocols and ethical distance guidelines to protect both guests and wildlife. For photography, we recommend a 200–400mm lens for cheetahs on the open plains and a 400–600mm lens for leopards in tree canopy or kopje settings. Fast apertures (f/2.8–f/4) and high ISO capability are essential for the dawn and dusk light that defines this itinerary.
